Richard Smith was working within Hull City Council as a Pod Coordinator for Children’s Social Care, when he decided that he would like to achieve further qualifications within his role. He heard about Adult Apprenticeships being offered by HBTC. Adult Apprenticeships are for people in existing roles who would like to upskill and develop. Adult Apprenticeships can increase your earning potential and provide the opportunity to enhance your CV with additional skills and qualifications.

After looking at HBTC's website, Richard decided to get in touch and the following day someone got in contact to discuss the opportunities available and booked him in for initial assessments. Richard decided to enrol onto the Advanced Apprenticeship in Business Administration “I have always wanted to work towards a Level 3 in Business Admin but never had the opportunity to do this. I always wanted to improve my skills and knowledge to achieve this qualification.”

Richard enjoyed the Apprenticeship and valued gaining new skills and knowledge and has progressed within the Council and is now an Administration Assistant/Receptionist at The Parks Children’s Centre. He also embraced the opportunity to improve his maths skills, an area in which he had previously struggled.

“I have gained lots of knowledge of different policies in business. Also how to use Microsoft programs to help improve efficiencies in my role.”

Richard has a disability called Neurofibromatosis which affects his vision and is therefore registered with impaired vision. He was happy with the support received from HBTC to enable him to achieve his course. “I think HBTC are ace. I got lots of help and support from them and felt really welcomed by everyone when I was in the centre. As I have a sight impairment they were supportive about getting documents enlarged for me including exam papers.”

Christine Havler, Richard’s Manager, enabled him to gain experiences in various admin tasks from which his progress was monitored. Christine noted that throughout the Apprenticeship journey Richard’s “attitude and confidence has grown and he brings a ray of sunshine to the office!!” Christine believes all employers should utilise Adult Apprenticeships for existing members of staff. Christine believes “It gives the opportunity to develop staff to help them in their businesses for the future.”
